Intro to Stage Combat
A (safe) crash course in the basics of hand-to-hand stage combat
Conflict is essential to great stories. Stage combat is a specialized technique in theatre designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers. In many ways, it has more in common with a combination of ballroom dance and stage magic that it does with any actual fighting discipline, as it is rehearsed and choreographed with an emphasis on sleight of hand to deceive audiences into believing the onstage conflict is real.
This introductory one-day course begins with a definition of stage combat and a demonstration of basics. The emphasis is on development of technique rather than performance, with a focus on accuracy and safety in unarmed combat. The group will learn and practice warm-ups and basics, so that students can develop personal understanding and command of their bodies, as they relate to theatrical physical conflict.
This course is for actors and non-actors who might find the basics of hand-to-hand combat interesting and fun. You must be 18 or older to attend.
